One day, the Hodja borrowed a big pot from
a neighbor. Afterwards, he gave it back with a
small pot in it. When the neighbor saw it, he
asked, “What’s this?” The Hodja said, “Your

pot gave birth!” The neighbor happily thanked
the Hodja. Next, he accepted the small pot. A
few weeks later, the Hodja borrowed the big pot
from the neighbor again, but this time he didn’t
return it. First, the neighbor waited for several
days, and then he came to the Hodja’s house.
After that, he asked, “What happened to my
pot?” The Hodja answered, “Your pot died.”
The neighbor was shocked. He said, “Pots don’t
die!” Finally, the Hodja said, “You believed that
your pot gave birth. Now why don’t you believe
that your pot died?”

 

C. Work with a different partner. Look at
activity D in While You Listen. Take turns to
tell the story with sequence words. Use the
prompts below or your own words.

One day, someone invited the Hodja to
a banquet. He dressed plainly but when he
went there, he saw everyone was wearing nice
clothes. No one welcomed him. They ignored
him so the Hodja was very unhappy. Next, he
went home quickly and put on his fur coat. After
that, he returned soon. Now everyone greeted
him politely. First, the Hodja didn’t start to eat.
While everyone was looking at him, he dunked
the sleeve of his coat into the soup bowl and
said, “Eat, my fur coat, eat!” Then he said,
“When I came here in plain clothes, you ignored
me. Afterwards, I went home and dressed
beautifully. When I came back, I was wearing a
fur coat so you offered me the best meals. You
respected my fur coat, not me. So it should eat!”

D. Work with a new partner. Look at activity
G in While You Listen. Take turns to tell the
Köroğlu story using some sequence words.

The Bey of Bolu was a very cruel man but he
loved horses. Yusuf was working as a stableman
for him. One day, he wanted him to find a
wonderful young horse. Yusuf found a young
horse. It didn’t look very beautiful but Yusuf said
to himself, “I believe it’ll be a wonderful horse in
the future.”

After that, he took the horse to the Bey of
Bolu but when he saw the horse, he didn’t like
it so he got very angry with Yusuf and blinded
him. Next, Yusuf left Bolu with the horse and
his son Ruşen Ali. Ruşen Ali said, “Don’t worry,
Father! I’ll take your revenge one day.”
Many years later, the horse became a
unique horse. Ruşen Ali also became a brave
and strong young man. Soon afterwards Yusuf
got very ill and died. Then Ruşen Ali went to

the mountains and people started to call him
Köroğlu. It meant the son of a blind man.
Lots of young men joined Köroğlu. They
took from the rich and gave to the poor. One
day, Köroğlu fought with the Bey of Bolu and
defeated him, so he took his father’s revenge
in the end.

Hodja bought 2 kilos of meat and he again told

Next, he weighed the cat. Then, he turned to

is the cat, where’s the meat? But if this is the
meat, then, where’s the cat?”

The allied naval forces started an attack on
18th March, 1915 because they wanted to pass
the Dardanelles (Çanakkale) Straits. Corporal
Seyit Ali was in Fort Rumeli Mecidiye then. The
enemy were bombarding the fort. Suddenly,
Seyit Ali and his friends saw that the crane wasn’t
working at all so they couldn’t lift the cannonballs
and fire the cannon. Just then, Corporal Seyit Ali
lifted a cannonball and put it on the cannon. His
friends couldn’t believe their eyes. Next, Seyit Ali
fired. The cannonball hit the enemy ship Ocean.
He carried two more cannonballs and shot. The
third one damaged Ocean badly. After a short
while, the ship crashed one of the mines in the sea
and sank. This changed the course of the war.
The enemy learned that Çanakkale is impassable.
